The Mistake Most Players Make

When the old shot returns, the natural assumption is that the swing change didn't stick.

So the search begins again.

Another lesson.

Another drill.

Another swing thought.

But what if the swing wasn't the first thing that changed?

That's a question very few players ever ask.

And in my experience, it's often where the real answers begin.

One Tour Tested Truth

One of the biggest breakthroughs I've seen over nearly 30 years of coaching is this:

The shot you see isn't always the problem you need to solve.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is assuming that the shot tells you exactly what needs to be fixed.

It doesn't.

The same miss can happen for different reasons.

That's why looking only at the ball flight or the swing on video doesn't always tell the whole story.

Before deciding what needs to change, you first have to understand why it changed.

What the Research Shows

Research in motor learning suggests that skilled performance isn't determined by mechanics alone. The conditions under which a skill is performed—including attention, pressure, and the environment—can significantly influence how consistently an athlete executes a learned movement. This helps explain why a player may perform well during practice yet struggle to reproduce the same movement during competition.

The takeaway isn't that mechanics stop mattering. Rather, lasting improvement depends on correctly identifying why performance changed before deciding what needs to be fixed.
